It’s that time again: Family History Month, and we at The Genealogy Center have a great month planned, with all sorts of great activities! The first week alone is a great kick-off!

We start with “An Afternoon of Storytelling,” on Saturday October 1, 2016, 4:00 p.m in the Discovery Center where Curt Witcher and Aaron Smith will lead a variety of individuals in telling stories and explain why storytelling is so important. Ake time to be inspired to tell your stories!

On Sunday, October 2, 2016, Allison Singleton will meet you at 1:00 p.m. at Lindenwood Cemetery, 2324 W. Main St., Fort Wayne for “Cemeteries Are Not Just for Ghosts: Lindenwood Cemetery.” This program will take place in Lindenwood Cemetery.  Come learn basic cemetery etiquette, participate in a scavenger hunt to search for unique gravestone carvings and symbolism, and learn how cemeteries can be helpful for family history research. We will also participate in a brief tour of the cemetery. Meet at the Lindenwood Parking Lot, 2324 W. Main St., Fort Wayne. Please dress comfortably for walking outside.

Kay Spears will provide the first of two separate sessions on “Photoshop Elements Alternatives” on Monday October 3, 2016, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., in the Computer Classroom on the first floor. Kay will explore a number of different free programs that may be used as an alternative to Adobe Photoshop Elements, and the pros and cons of each program. Bring your images on a USB drive and experiment. The second session is Monday, October 10th, at the same time. Space is limited and registration is required, so sign up soon!

Since this is the first week of Family History Month, we are offering “Beginner’s Guide to Vital Records” on Tuesday October 4, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. in the Discovery Center. Delia Bourne will explain what can be found in a vital record, and what other sources may be used when the official record is missing.

Allison DePrey Singleton will provide a nice break on Wednesday October 5, 2016, at 6:30 p.m. with “The Genealogy of Beer” in the Discovery Center. Breweries have a history in Fort Wayne almost as long as Indiana has been a state. With this rich and bubbly heritage, it is only natural to look at the history and genealogy of some of the well-known breweries and brewers in this city. Come learn about beer and perhaps pick up a few tips on learning how to research the occupations of your own ancestors.

Have you done a DNA test for genealogical purposes? Do you completely understand the results you received? Do you need advice in interpreting your results? Are you interested and wonder what the best test is for you? Come to the “DNA Interest Group Meeting” to share and learn from each other on Thursday October 6, 2016, 6:30 p.m. in the Discovery Center. We plan to make this a regular Group Meeting, so be there for the first!

And on Friday October 7, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. in the Discovery Center Cynthia Theusch will demonstrate the basic features of “RootsMagic Software.” Learn about the “what’s new” features and tips to help you add family facts, photos and source citations. The presenter also will show how to search the Internet while in the RootsMagic program.

So that’s the first seven days of Family History Month 2016! For more information, see the brochure. Register for any (or all) of these events by calling 260-421-1225 or send an email to Genealogy@ACPL.Info.

Remember that for each program you attend in October, and each time you interact with us on Facebook, you will be entered into a drawing for door prizes!
